1940 BMW Spyder Berlinetta

1940 BMW Spyder Berlinetta

For the 1940 Mille Miglia, BMW designed (and had constructed by Carrozzeria Touring) a special series of 328 spyders with a unique aerodynamic style. Post WWII, one of these spyders ended up in the UK and William Lyons used it as inspiration for the Jaguar XK120!

The concept here was to take the style of the 328MM spyder and turn it into a racing berlinetta. Yes — the doors are somewhat impractical but it was built for the Mille Miglia and Le Mans and pitstops were slow in that period. Plus no coachbuilder would want to build doors that extended down further as it would be very complex to do.  Also no way will windows function in those doors and thus the style of rear quarter windows of some Talbot Lago with a similar ventilation problem.
